Migraine Headache and its phases

Migraine is a complex condition with wide variety of symptom include a severe headache, nausea, vomiting, feeling seek, light, sound and smell sensitivity. There are four phases of migraine in usual which some people may experience during migraine attack. However symptoms of migraine may vary person to person. Migraine attack can last from 4 hours to 72 hours and it can hamper your work, family and social life. Causes of migraine are not understood by researcher but some factors play role in migraine. It is an outcome some specific change within the brain and lead to the characteristic pain.

The most common types of migraine fall under two categories.

Migraine without aura(common migraine): In this type of migraine, people experience throbbing pain on head which is moderate to severe and can become worst with normal physical activities. You may also have nausea, vomiting, light, sound and smell sensitivity  and feeling seek,. This type of attack can last from 4 hours to 72 hours.

Migraine with aura (classic migraine): Some people may have experience an aura or warning symptoms such as include seeing wavy lines, flashing lights, or objects that look distorted etc before migraine attack. (1)

Not every people experience a ‘typical’ migraine, condition may vary person to person.

Phases of Migraine:

Prodromal Phase (Early warning phase): In this stage people may feel tiredness, depressed, craving for specific food, stiff neck, feeling thirsty, changes of mood, few hours before migraine attack or even a day before.

Aura Phase: This phase normally happened before occurring migraine attack. People may feel symptoms such as distorted vision, hard to focus on small object, speech and hearing may also be disturbed, feeling confusion, skin sensation, in rare cases temporary weakness on a side of body (hemiplegic Migraine) during this phase. This phase may not be present always.

Attack Phase: This phase involves with severe headache that may last from few hours to days.  Head pain is usually throbbing type, unbearable and normal activities can even worsen the pain. Some people may feel seek, nausea, vomiting, sensitive to light and sound. Usually headache affects one side of the head but it spread to the entire head or moves from one side to another. Some people feel pain on both sides of the head, forehead. It may also affect the lower face and back.

Postdromal Phase: It is the final stage of migraine. You may not feel well in this period. It may take hours to day to disappear hangover of migraine attack. You may feel tiredness, lower mood level, poor concentration many similar symptoms as the first stage.

Different people may experience migraine headache or pain different way. Migraine attack may not always include all these above phases of Migraine and you may have migraine without aura.
